A6 Birstall Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge

Description

Providing a link between the Birstall Park and Ride site and the new Hallam Fields housing development, we were contracted to design and supply a stand out bridge over the A6. The design is an interesting variation on a Bow-string Vierendeel truss with the top chords splayed out considerably in section. This creates a much more ‘open’ structure which really provides a visual impact when approaching the bridge. The top and bottom chords and vertical bracings are formed from circular hollow sections which tend to give the truss a more slender appearance.

Due to the overall size of the truss, the bridge was transported to site in 4 sections on our specialist ‘wing carrier’ extendable trailers and bolted together adjacent to the final position. A 500t crane was used to lift the complete structure in place during a night time road closure.
